USA BBCOR explained: what changes in 2027, 2028 and 2029
USA Baseball now runs BBCOR. Here's what the new mark means, when the bats arrive, and whether your BBCOR bat stays legal. Last checked Oct 23, 2026.
On July 2, 2026, USA Baseball took over the BBCOR standard from the NCAA and renamed it USA BBCOR. The performance standard is the same: still -3, 2 5/8" barrel, 36" max. What changes is the mark on the bat and the dates leagues require it.
The timeline
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| July 2, 2026 | USA Baseball takes over BBCOR. No performance change. |
| 2027 season | Nothing changes for players. High school, Little League and travel ball use the same BBCOR .50 bats. |
| July 1, 2027 | USA BBCOR bats ("USA Baseball BBCOR Certified .50") reach stores. The approved list goes up on usabat.com. |
| 2028 season | High school (NFHS) allows USA BBCOR bats plus new high-school USABat bats at -4, -5 and -6. The NCAA also accepts USA BBCOR. |
| Jan 1, 2029 | The NCAA requires the USA BBCOR mark on every non-wood bat. Old BBCOR .50 bats are out in college. |
Will my BBCOR bat still be legal?
- High school: yes. BBCOR .50 bats already certified stay legal in high school indefinitely.
- NCAA college: through the 2028 season only. From Jan 1, 2029 you need the USA BBCOR mark.
- Little League Intermediate, Junior and Senior: no change for 2027. Little League says it will announce the teen-division plan later.
- Travel ball and American Legion: they say "BBCOR" and haven't addressed the new mark yet. Because it's the same standard, it's expected to be accepted, but confirm with your event.
Who should wait for USA BBCOR?
If your player will be in college baseball in 2029 or later, a BBCOR bat bought in 2027 gives them two high school seasons at most before it's illegal at the next level. Buying a USA BBCOR bat after July 1, 2027 avoids that. For everyone else, a current BBCOR bat is fine.
