High school bat rules 2028: the new -4, -5 and -6 option

From 2028, high schools allow lighter USABat bats with a special high-school mark. Here's what's legal and what isn't. Last checked Oct 23, 2026.

For the 2027 season, high school baseball is unchanged: BBCOR .50 (-3) or one-piece wood. Starting in 2028, the NFHS rule (1-3-2d) adds two options.

Legal in high school from 2028

  • BBCOR .50 bats: legal indefinitely.
  • USA BBCOR bats (-3): in stores from July 1, 2027.
  • High-school USABat bats at -4, -5 or -6: these must carry a modified high-school USA Baseball mark. Nothing lighter than -6.
  • One-piece solid wood: no mark needed.

Not legal

  • A regular youth USABat at -5, even though it's a USA Baseball bat. It needs the new high-school mark.
  • Any USSSA (1.15 BPF) bat.
  • Stickers or decals in place of a permanent mark.

Who it's for

The lighter option is meant to ease the jump from youth bats to -3, especially for freshmen. A -5 high-school bat is a good bridge for a smaller 14- or 15-year-old, but if they're also playing summer travel ball, check that event's rules: many travel organizations require -3 BBCOR at 14U and up.
